Tunnelling Burglar Cuts Through Restaurant Roof to Rob Neighboring Business

CHICAGO — Chicago detectives are investigating an unusual and highly coordinated commercial burglary on the city's North Side, where a thief gained entry to a restaurant by cutting a hole in the roof, before tunneling through a wall to target an adjacent business.

The complex heist took place during overnight hours. According to Chicago police, the suspect scaled the building and cut a hole directly through the roof of a local restaurant to gain access inside. Once inside the restaurant, the burglar did not stop there; they proceeded to cut through the shared drywall/partition wall to enter the neighboring business.

After tunneling into the second business, the thief ransacked the premises, locating cash and other valuable assets before escaping. The owners of both properties discovered the damage and theft the following morning and immediately contacted law enforcement.

Business owners expressed shock at the extreme measures taken by the burglar. Forensic investigators spent hours at the scene collecting evidence, including tool marks and potential DNA samples left near the rooftop entry point and the tunneled wall.

Area detectives are reviewing area security camera footage to identify suspects or any lookout vehicles used during the operation. No arrests have been made, and anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Chicago police.
