Two Arrested After South Side Railcar Burglary; COPA Investigating Shots Fired by Police

Two individuals are in police custody following a railcar burglary on the city's South Side, which escalated into a police-involved shooting. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of a weapon by an officer.

The incident unfolded when responding officers intercepted a group of individuals actively burglarizing a cargo railcar. During the confrontation, an officer discharged their service weapon. No injuries from the gunfire were reported, and the two primary suspects were apprehended at the scene.

COPA, the independent watchdog agency for the Chicago Police Department, is collecting body-worn camera footage and speaking with witnesses as part of its standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. Further charges against the suspects are pending as detectives continue their investigation into the railroad theft ring.
