Two Arrested in Connection with August 2023 Credit Union Robbery in Evansville
EVANSVILLE, IN โ Two suspects have been arrested and are facing charges in connection with a bank robbery that took place at an Evansville credit union in August 2023. The arrests follow a nearly year-long investigation involving local law enforcement and federal agencies.
According to the Evansville Police Department, 25-year-old Markez Wynn and 25-year-old Stephen Hampton were taken into custody in Tennessee. They are the primary suspects in the robbery of the Indiana Members Credit Union, located on Eagle Crest Boulevard in Evansville, which occurred in August 2023.
A Multi-Jurisdictional Investigation
The investigation began immediately after the credit union was targeted. Detectives with the Evansville Police Department utilized a combination of local security footage, commercial surveillance, and Flock safety license plate reader cameras to identify a potential suspect vehicle. The vehicle information was shared through national law enforcement databases, prompting collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and police departments in neighboring states.
Investigators soon discovered that Wynn and Hampton were suspects in several other bank robberies spanning across Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The breakthroughs in the case came when the suspects were apprehended in Kentucky for a bank robbery committed in that state.
Charges and Extradition
While the two men are currently facing charges in other jurisdictions where they were captured, local officials confirmed that charges are pending in Vanderburgh County for the Evansville robbery. The Evansville Police Department credited the cooperation between the public, local business owners, and federal partners in successfully tracking down the suspects after months of investigation.
