U-Haul trucks smashed through Detroit, Royal Oak Township businesses

DETROIT, MI — Authorities in Detroit and Royal Oak Township are investigating a series of brazen smash-and-grab burglaries targeting local businesses. The suspects utilized rented U-Haul moving trucks as battering rams to breach storefront structures and gain rapid entry.

The incidents occurred during the late-night hours, leaving substantial structural damage behind at multiple commercial retail storefronts. Business owners arrived to find shattered walls, collapsed doors, and scattered debris.

Battering Ram Tactics

Police reported that the thieves backed the U-Haul trucks at high speeds directly into the entrances of the businesses, instantly disabling security shutters and glass doors. Once the path was cleared, several individuals entered the establishments to loot electronics, safes, and high-value merchandise.

The use of rented moving trucks in commercial burglaries is a growing trend, as it provides thieves with both a heavy vehicle to breach buildings and a large cargo space to transport stolen goods quickly.

Joint forces from the Detroit Police Department and Royal Oak Township investigators are working together to track down the rented vehicles and identify the renters. Retailers in the area are being advised to reinforce their storefronts with protective bollards to prevent future vehicle-ramming incidents.
