Van Nuys Self-Defense Shop Targeted Again in Repeated Weekly Burglaries
A Van Nuys retail store specializing in non-lethal self-defense weapons was broken into for the second time in a single week, raising alarms about the persistence of commercial burglaries in the San Fernando Valley.
Suspects Spend 22 Minutes Inside Shop
The latest incident occurred at NakeStores, located in the 7600 block of Van Nuys Boulevard. Security cameras captured a trio of suspects breaking into the business by shattering a side window after finding the front security doors locked. Once inside, the burglars spent an unusually long 22 minutes systematically gathering inventory.
The thieves stole various self-defense products, including tasers, specialized projectiles, and Byrna less-lethal pistols. Byrna devices are popular non-lethal weapons that fire chemical irritant or kinetic projectiles using carbon dioxide cartridges, frequently used by citizens for home defense. The suspects eventually escaped through a rear exit before police arrived.
Owner Expresses Outrage Over Retail Environment
Mike Mahfoud, the owner of NakeStores, expressed deep frustration over the frequency of the break-ins. According to Mahfoud, the frequency of crimes has escalated dramatically, shifting from occasional monthly occurrences to multiple violations within days. He noted the high financial cost of repairing shattered entryways and replacing stolen inventory.
The Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Division is investigating the burglary. Police are looking into whether the same group of suspects is responsible for both break-ins at the shop and are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the culprits.
