Vigilant Neighbour Intervenes to Thwart Late-Night Break-In at Arbroath Shop
A quick-thinking resident has been praised for preventing a major burglary at a retail premises in Arbroath. The incident, which took place in the late hours of Tuesday, April 7, 2026, left the store with substantial damage but saved the business owner from losing thousands of pounds in stock.
The alarm was raised when a neighbour heard suspicious, loud crashing sounds coming from the front of the shop. Peering outside, the witness spotted individuals attempting to force their way through the security shutters and front door. The neighbour immediately phoned the police and shouted at the suspects, successfully disrupting the attempted break-in and causing the culprits to flee the scene before they could gain entry to the main store floor.
Despite the successful intervention, the shopfront sustained significant structural damage. The outer security gates were twisted out of shape, and the glass pane on the front door was completely shattered. Police Scotland have launched an appeal for witnesses, urging anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the area around the time of the incident to come forward.
A police spokesperson commented: "We are extremely grateful for the quick action of the local community member who alerted us. Thanks to their vigilance, the suspects were unable to complete the theft, although they have left a local business facing a costly repair bill. Officers are active in the area conducting door-to-door enquiries."
