WATCH: ‘Snow bandits’ strike Elyria, but getaway turns into a ‘comedy of errors,’ police say
ELYRIA, Ohio — The Elyria Police Department has released dramatic and somewhat comical bodycam footage showing the arrest of two young men who local authorities are calling the "snow bandits." The suspects' attempt to pull off an early-morning heist at a local powersports dealership quickly devolved into what officers described as a "comedy of errors" after fresh winter snowfall left an undeniable trail directly to their hiding spot.
According to police reports, the incident began in the pre-dawn hours of January 15, 2026, when an alarm was triggered at Johnny K's Powersports located at 3000 Midway Mall. Arriving officers discovered a shattered glass entry door on the east side of the building and quickly determined that two dirt bikes, valued at over $11,000, had been stolen from the showroom floor.
A Trail Too Fresh to Miss
Unfortunately for the thieves, their getaway plan did not account for the heavy overnight snowfall. Upon inspecting the crime scene, officers noticed a distinct and continuous trail of footprints and tire tracks cutting through the freshly fallen snow. The tracks led away from the shattered storefront, leading investigators through a nearby wooded area where the suspects had abandoned the heavy dirt bikes after realizing the difficulty of pushing them through the deep drifts.
Undeterred, police continued to follow the foot traffic. The footprints led them across a freezing, shallow stream and directly to an apartment complex located in the 1400 block of West River Road North.
Found Under the Stairs
Inside the apartment building, officers discovered the two suspects, still clad in dark clothing and ski masks, wedged underneath a stairwell in an attempt to evade detection. The bodycam footage shows officers ordering the suspects out of their hiding spot at gunpoint, with the suspects compliance bringing a swift end to the pursuit.
The two men, identified as Jean Vazquez-Irlanda, 21, and Alan Rodriguez-Feliciano, 21, were taken into custody without further incident. One of the suspects reportedly confessed to the crime shortly after being apprehended, admitting that pushing the motorcycles through the snow was far more difficult than they had anticipated.
Both individuals have been charged with felony counts of breaking and entering, grand theft, and vandalism, alongside misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business. They are currently being held in the Lorain County Jail pending their initial court appearances.
