Worcester Hobby Store Targeted by Thief Who Stole Up to $3,000 in Rare Pokémon Cards

WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester Police are investigating the theft of thousands of dollars worth of Pokémon cards from a local business that serves as a community hub for gaming enthusiasts.

The incident occurred at Otaku Sekai, a shop located on Park Avenue that specializes in Japanese manga, anime merchandise, and trading cards. According to store owner John Le, a thief managed to steal roughly 500 individual Pokémon cards, with an estimated retail value ranging between $1,500 and $3,000.

A Calculated Theft

Store surveillance cameras captured the suspect browsing the shop's trading card section. The footage shows the man carefully flipping through binders of cards, occasionally slipping valuable cards into his pockets and sweatshirt.

Before leaving the store without paying, the suspect grabbed an entire binder containing vintage cards from the late 1990s and early 2000s, including cards from the popular Fossil and Jungle expansion sets, as well as highly collectible e-Reader holographic cards.

Community Impact

The shop owners expressed disappointment, stating that the loss of inventory hurts their ability to cater to local hobbyists. Worcester Police have obtained the security footage and are requesting assistance from the public to identify the suspect. Anyone with information is urged to contact local authorities.
