Fatal Targeted Incident at Ajax Home Initially Reported as Break-In

Durham Regional Police are actively investigating a fatal incident at a residence in Ajax that left one man dead and prompted a search for two fleeing suspects.

Violent Incident on Shorten Place

According to police, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a break-in at a home located near the intersection of Shorten Place and Haskell Avenue at approximately 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday.

Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders located an adult male suffering from severe "traumatic injuries." Despite medical efforts, the man was later pronounced dead. Police have confirmed this marks the second homicide in Durham Region for the year 2026.

At a news conference, Constable Nicholas Gluckstein reported that witnesses observed two suspects fleeing the scene on foot before police officers could arrive. A K9 unit was deployed to search the surrounding area, but the suspects were not located.

Police Believe Incident Was Targeted

While the initial emergency call indicated a break-and-enter was in progress, Constable Gluckstein clarified that investigators now believe the violent encounter was a targeted incident, rather than a random home invasion or burglary.

Police have also stated that they do not believe this is a case of domestic violence. As of now, investigators have not released the identity of the deceased man, nor have they clarified whether he was a resident of the home or an alleged intruder. Those details will be shared once next-of-kin have been notified and more information is gathered.

Authorities have reassured the community that there are no ongoing concerns for broader public safety.

Call for Security Footage

Investigators are canvassing the neighbourhood and are urgently appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone living near Shorten Place and Haskell Avenue is asked to review their home security cameras, doorbell cameras, or dashcam footage recorded between midnight and 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Anyone with relevant video footage or any information regarding this fatal incident is urged to contact Durham Regional Police investigators immediately. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.

Securing Your Home at Night

Even when incidents are targeted, a secure home perimeter is your best defense against unexpected late-night visitors or intruders. Consider these safety measures:

  • Keep Exterior Areas Lit: Ensure your front porch, side yards, and backyards are well-lit. Motion-sensor lights are highly effective at startling anyone approaching your home in the dark.
  • Install Visible Cameras: Security cameras serve a dual purpose: they act as a strong visual deterrent and provide crucial evidence to police if a crime occurs in your neighbourhood.
  • Lock Doors and Windows: Make it a strict nightly routine to double-check that all exterior doors, ground-floor windows, and garage access doors are securely locked before going to bed.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you see unknown individuals or vehicles lingering in your neighbourhood late at night, trust your instincts and report the suspicious activity to the police non-emergency line.
