Armed Home Invasion Triggers Emergency Alert Across Colchester County
Residents across several Nova Scotia counties were jolted awake early Wednesday morning by an emergency alert urging them to lock their doors and stay inside following a brazen, armed home invasion in Shubenacadie East.
The Armed Robbery
According to the RCMP, officers were dispatched to a residence in Shubenacadie East shortly before 1:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a home invasion. A male victim reported being robbed by a suspect wielding a firearm.
Following the robbery, the armed suspect fled the scene in the victim's own pickup truck. He was accompanied by a second man and a woman who had been present at the home but ran outside during the chaotic incident.
Emergency Alert Issued
Given the involvement of a firearm and the suspects fleeing the scene, the RCMP issued a critical emergency alert at approximately 2:44 a.m. The alert was broadcast to residents in Colchester, Pictou, Cumberland, and Hants counties. The message instructed everyone in the affected areas to close and lock all doors and windows, remain in a secure location, and avoid driving.
High-Tech Takedown in Salmon River
The situation came to a head when RCMP utilized the stolen pickup truck’s own technology against the suspects. Police were able to remotely track the vehicle's location. When the truck reached Ice Pond Drive in the community of Salmon River—about 30 kilometres north of the initial crime scene—authorities used the vehicle's on-board security system to remotely immobilize it, bringing the suspects to a halt.
The female occupant was arrested shortly after the vehicle was disabled. Police officers then searched the immobilized truck and successfully located two firearms inside.
A police drone was subsequently deployed to assist in the search for the male suspects, successfully locating one of the men. As of Wednesday morning, the RCMP were still actively seeking the final suspect involved in the robbery.
However, with the firearms recovered, police determined the immediate danger had passed and lifted the emergency alert for all counties by 7:00 a.m. Authorities have stated they believe this was a "targeted incident" and there is no ongoing threat to broader public safety.
Securing Vehicles and Homes
While this was a targeted attack, it highlights how vehicle theft is often linked to home break-ins. Take steps to secure both:
- Keep Keys Out of Sight: Never leave vehicle keys on a table or hook near the front door where they can be easily grabbed if an intruder forces entry. Keep them hidden in a secure location.
- Activate Vehicle Security Systems: Modern vehicles, like the one in this incident, often have advanced tracking and immobilization features. Ensure these services are active through your manufacturer or dealership.
- Harden Exterior Doors: Ensure all exterior doors on your home are solid core and equipped with heavy-duty deadbolts and reinforced strike plates to resist forced entry.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice unusual vehicles or individuals lingering in your neighbourhood, especially late at night, report it to the non-emergency police line.
