Thieves Smash Door, Steal $5,000 in Daytime Georgetown Break-In

Halton Regional Police are actively investigating a significant residential break-and-enter that occurred during daylight hours in Georgetown, leaving homeowners short of valuable personal items.

Daytime Break-In on Upper Canada Court

The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 27. According to police reports, the break-in happened sometime during a large window of opportunity between 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. while the residents were likely away from the home.

Investigators determined that the suspect or suspects targeted a property located on Upper Canada Court. To gain entry to the house, the intruders bypassed the front door and went directly to the back of the property, where they completely smashed the rear glass door.

Over $5,000 in Valuables Stolen

Once inside the home, the thieves quickly searched for high-value, easily concealable items. Police confirmed that the suspects successfully made off with a significant amount of cash and various pieces of jewelry.

The total value of the stolen property is estimated to be worth more than $5,000.

Investigation and Search for Suspects

The investigation into the break-in is currently ongoing. As of this report, Halton Regional Police have not been able to provide any physical descriptions of the suspects involved, nor do they have details regarding a potential getaway vehicle.

Police are appealing to anyone living in the Upper Canada Court area who may have noticed suspicious vehicles or individuals loitering between 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on January 27 to review their home security or doorbell cameras.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to contact the Halton Regional Police Service directly at 905-825-4777. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at haltoncrimestoppers.ca.

Protecting Vulnerable Glass Doors

Rear glass doors, particularly sliding patio doors, are notoriously common entry points for burglars. Homeowners should consider taking immediate steps to reinforce them:

  • Apply Security Window Film: Standard glass shatters easily and quietly. Applying a heavy-duty, shatter-resistant security film holds the glass fragments together even when struck, making it significantly harder and louder to breach the door.
  • Install a Floor Pin Lock: For sliding doors, a simple locking mechanism built into the handle is insufficient. Install a steel floor pin lock that anchors the sliding panel directly into the door track or the floor.
  • Add Glass-Break Sensors: If you have a home security system, ensure that glass-break sensors are installed in the same room as your patio doors. These sensors detect the specific acoustic frequency of shattering glass and will trigger the alarm even if the door is never opened.
