Kelowna Man Arrested After Violent Daylight Carjacking and High-Speed Flee
The Kelowna detachment of the RCMP has successfully apprehended a male suspect following a violent daytime carjacking and assault that prompted a multi-jurisdictional police response, including the use of an RCMP helicopter.
Daylight Assault and Carjacking
The disturbing incident occurred late Thursday morning on February 12. At approximately 11:30 a.m., local Mounties were alerted to an ongoing assault in progress near the intersection of Ambrosi Road and Agassiz Road.
According to police reports, a heated argument had erupted between two individuals who were already acquainted with one another. The verbal dispute rapidly escalated into a physical assault.
Following the assault, the suspect reportedly overpowered the victim, stole their motor vehicle by force, and immediately fled the scene at a high rate of speed, leaving the victim behind.
RCMP Helicopter Deployed in Pursuit
Mounties quickly broadcasted the description of the stolen vehicle to surrounding jurisdictions. Police successfully located and tracked the stolen vehicle as it was seen speeding aggressively toward Vernon through the Glenmore Valley corridor.
Due to the suspect's reckless driving and the inherent danger of a high-speed ground pursuit on public roads, the RCMP called in their Air Services helicopter to safely monitor the situation from above.
"With assistance from the RCMP helicopter, police were able to observe the suspect’s dangerous driving and manage the event in a way that reduced risk to both the public and the officers," the RCMP stated in a news release regarding the operation.
Suspect Arrested in Vernon
The aerial surveillance allowed ground units to strategically coordinate their response. The suspect eventually pulled into a gas station located in Vernon, where heavily armed officers were waiting.
The suspect was taken into police custody at the gas station without further incident.
Authorities have officially identified the suspect as James Wilkinson, a resident of Kelowna. Wilkinson is now facing a slew of serious criminal charges, which include:
- Robbery
- Theft of a motor vehicle
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Failure to stop after an accident
Wilkinson recently made a brief court appearance and remains held in police custody as he awaits his next scheduled court date.
Preventing Vehicle Theft and Carjacking
While this specific incident involved individuals who were acquainted, carjackings can happen to anyone. Drivers should remain vigilant and practice situational awareness:
- Keep Doors Locked: Always drive with your doors locked and your windows rolled up, especially when stopped at intersections or sitting in parking lots.
- Maintain Distance: When stopped in traffic, always leave enough space between your vehicle and the car in front of you so you can maneuver and escape if approached aggressively.
- Surrender the Vehicle: If you are confronted by a carjacker, do not resist. A vehicle can be replaced; your life cannot. Give up the keys and distance yourself from the attacker as quickly as possible.
