50-Year-Old Medicine Hat Man Arrested with Break-In Tools Following Vehicle Theft

Medicine Hat law enforcement has announced that a 50-year-old local resident is facing a slew of charges following his arrest in connection with a vehicle theft.

Incident Overview

The incident unfolded on Tuesday, May 28, at approximately 1:49 p.m. Police officers successfully located a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of nearby Redcliff. The stolen vehicle was discovered parked in the 900 block of Ross Street Southeast in Medicine Hat.

Upon locating the vehicle, officers swiftly moved in and arrested 50-year-old Trent Collier without incident. A subsequent inspection of the vehicle revealed that it had sustained significant damage to its ignition system, a common indicator of forced starting methods.

Additional Disturbing Discoveries

The investigation did not end with the recovery of the stolen vehicle. While searching the vehicle and the suspect's immediate vicinity, officers uncovered a troubling collection of items.

Police seized various pieces of property that were addressed to other individuals, suggesting potential mail theft or prior burglaries. More alarmingly, officers confiscated three boxes of 12-gauge shotgun shells and an assortment of tools that are highly consistent with break-and-enter activities.

The discovery of these break-in tools and ammunition has led to additional charges against Collier, although the full extent of the charges remains under ongoing investigation by local authorities.

Vehicle and Home Security Tips

The seizure of break-and-enter tools during this vehicle theft arrest highlights the frequent overlap between auto theft and residential burglaries. Protect your property by taking the following precautions:

  • Secure Your Vehicles: Always lock your vehicle doors and never leave the keys inside. If possible, park in a well-lit area or a locked garage. Use steering wheel locks to deter thieves who bypass ignition systems.
  • Protect Your Mail: The recovery of stolen property addressed to others serves as a reminder to retrieve your mail promptly every day. Consider installing a locked mailbox if you are frequently away from home.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice unfamiliar individuals loitering around vehicles or homes in your neighborhood, contact the police. Your report could be the key to preventing a break-in or recovering stolen property.
