Home Security Alarm Scares Off Intruders in Early Morning Milton Break-In

A residential security system proved its worth over the weekend, successfully thwarting a break-and-enter in progress and sending two would-be burglars fleeing into the night in Milton.

Alarm Awakens Sleeping Homeowner

The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, at a home located on Trudeau Drive. According to Halton Regional Police, the attempted burglary began at approximately 1:45 a.m.

Investigators report that the unknown culprits targeted the rear of the property. The suspects managed to physically pry open the home's back door to gain entry. However, their intrusion immediately triggered the home's active security alarm system.

The loud, sudden noise of the alarm awoke the sleeping homeowner upstairs. When the resident rushed downstairs to investigate the commotion, they witnessed two shadowy figures immediately abandoning their break-in attempt, bolting back out the rear door, and escaping through the backyard.

Suspects Flee Empty-Handed

Because the alarm system alerted the homeowner and scared off the suspects so rapidly, the intruders had no time to explore the home or gather valuables. Police have confirmed that no property was reported stolen during the brief intrusion, and no words were exchanged between the fleeing suspects and the homeowner.

Given the darkness and the speed of their escape, the homeowner could only provide a limited description of the suspects to the police. Both individuals were reported to be wearing dark clothing.

Halton Regional Police are actively investigating the incident and are asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the Trudeau Drive area early Saturday morning to come forward. Information can be provided to police by calling 905-825-4777 or by contacting Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The Importance of Monitored Alarms

This incident is a textbook example of how a functional security system can prevent a break-in from escalating into a costly robbery or a dangerous confrontation. Maximize your system's effectiveness with these tips:

  • Arm It Every Night: A security system only works if you remember to turn it on. Make arming your system the final step of your nightly "locking up" routine before heading to bed.
  • Use Perimeter Sensors: Ensure your system includes door and window sensors (contact sensors) on every ground-floor entry point, not just motion detectors inside. You want the alarm to trigger the second the perimeter is breached, as it did in this case.
  • Display Security Signs: Clearly display signs or window decals indicating your home is protected by an alarm system. Many burglars will simply bypass a home if they know an alarm is present.
  • Maintain Your Hardware: Regularly check that all sensors are securely attached and that the main alarm panel has fresh backup batteries in case of a power outage or tampering.
