Protecting Valuables in Your Home

Burglars often target homes searching for small, high-value items like jewelry and cash that are easy to carry and sell. Take these steps to protect your valuables:

  • Secure Secondary Entrances: Side and back doors are common entry points because they are less visible from the street. Ensure these doors are solid wood or metal and equip them with heavy-duty deadbolts.
  • Use a Home Safe: Store expensive jewelry, important documents, and spare cash in a heavy, high-quality safe that is securely bolted to the floor or wall.
  • Hide Valuables Unconventionally: Thieves quickly ransack master bedrooms looking for jewelry boxes. Consider hiding valuables in less obvious locations, such as hollowed-out books or false-bottom containers in the pantry.
  • Keep Quiet About Absences: Never announce your travel plans or evening outings on public social media accounts. You never know who might be monitoring your whereabouts.
