Suspects Disguised as Landscaping Crew Break Into Niagara Falls Home

The Niagara Regional Police Service is asking for the public's assistance in identifying a group of burglars who used a clever disguise to target a residential property in Niagara Falls.

Burglars Disguised as Workers

The break-and-enter occurred late Monday morning or early afternoon at a home situated near the north end of Dorchester Road. According to detectives, at least three individuals were involved in the coordinated burglary.

Security footage captured the suspects dressed in attire specifically chosen to mimic a landscaping or construction crew. The individuals were seen wearing green hoodies, brown khaki work pants, work hats, and dark masks. They also carried black backpacks, and notably, one suspect was carrying a collapsible ladder to further sell the deception.

Police believe the suspects parked a vehicle at the north end of Dorchester Road and then walked along the nearby train tracks to discreetly access the rear of the targeted residence. They subsequently forced entry into the home through a back door.

Call for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage

The area around the north end of Dorchester Road is known to be popular with locals walking dogs, utilizing hiking trails, or parking to enjoy their lunch breaks. Investigators are hopeful that someone in the area may have unknowingly witnessed the suspects before or after the break-in.

Police are urging anyone who was in the vicinity on Monday midday to review their dashcam or home security footage for individuals matching the description of the "work crew" or any suspicious vehicles parked nearby.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Niagara Regional Police at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009558. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at CrimeStoppersNiagara.ca.

Protecting Against Daytime Burglaries

Daytime break-ins are common, as perpetrators assume homes are empty while residents are at work. Take these steps to secure your home:

  • Question Unexpected Workers: If a utility, construction, or landscaping crew arrives at your home or your neighbour's home unexpectedly, do not hesitate to ask for identification or call the company directly to verify their presence.
  • Secure Rear Access Points: Burglars prefer rear doors and windows because they offer privacy from the street. Ensure all back doors have heavy-duty deadbolts and consider installing reinforced glass or security film.
  • Make Your Home Look Occupied: Even when you are away, use timers on interior lights and radios to create the illusion that someone is home.
  • Install Visible Cameras: Clearly visible security cameras, especially those covering rear entrances and blind spots, are a strong deterrent for criminals, even those in disguise.
