Suspect Arrested Inside North Bay Home During Evening Break-In

The North Bay Police Service is praising the community's quick reporting and their officers' rapid response following a distressing home invasion that occurred on the evening of May 29.

Incident Details

At approximately 9:00 p.m., the NBPS Patrol Section was dispatched following reports of a break and enter in progress at a residence located in the 400 block of Nipissing Street. According to authorities, an intruder unlawfully gained entry into the home while two occupants were inside. The residents did not know the suspect.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers entered the residence and located the intruder still inside. Fortunately, the situation was resolved swiftly, and the suspect was arrested without further incident, ensuring the safety of the residents.

Arrest and Charges

Police have identified the suspect as 30-year-old Thristen Deveau of North Bay. Deveau has been formally charged with "Break and enter to commit an indictable offence." Following his arrest, he was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

"This was a deeply unsettling incident, and I want to commend the quick actions of everyone involved," stated Acting Deputy Chief Jeff Warner. "The prompt response of those who reported the incident, combined with the quick actions of responding officers, was instrumental in ensuring the safety of those inside the residence and preventing further harm."

Preventing Break and Enters

Having an intruder enter your home while you are present is a terrifying scenario. Consider the following tips to help secure your residence and protect your family:

  • Keep Doors Locked: Make it a habit to lock all exterior doors and windows, even when you are home and awake. An unlocked door is an easy invitation for an opportunistic criminal.
  • Maintain Outdoor Visibility: Ensure that the exterior of your home is well-lit, especially around entry points. Trim back overgrown bushes or trees where an intruder might hide.
  • Have an Emergency Plan: Discuss with your household what to do if an intruder is detected. Keep your mobile phone accessible to dial 911 immediately, just as the individuals in this incident did.
  • Install a Security System: Consider installing an alarm system with visible exterior cameras. Simply having these devices present can be a strong deterrent against potential intruders.
