Four Suspects Sought After Oshawa Family Held at Gunpoint in Home Invasion
Durham Regional Police have launched an urgent search for four suspects following a terrifying early-morning home invasion that saw a local Oshawa family held at gunpoint.
Incident Details
The horrifying ordeal unfolded on Wednesday, May 15, at approximately 2:45 a.m. According to police reports, three masked men forcibly broke into a residence located in the area of Cobblehill Drive and Attersley Drive, near the intersection of Harmony Road and Rossland Road.
Once inside, the armed intruders gathered the home's occupants—two adults and one youth—and held them together at gunpoint while the suspects ransacked the home, searching for valuables.
In a surprising turn of events, the intruders ultimately fled the residence without stealing any property. They escaped the area in a waiting getaway vehicle that was being driven by a fourth suspect.
While the family was undoubtedly traumatized by the violent intrusion, police confirmed that none of the victims were physically injured.
Police Appeal for Assistance
The Durham Regional Police Auto Robbery Crime Unit has taken charge of the investigation and is appealing to the public for help.
Investigators are urging anyone who was driving in the area between 2:00 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., and who may have dashcam footage, to come forward. Additionally, residents with outdoor security cameras or cell phone footage from that timeframe are asked to review their recordings for any suspicious vehicles or activity.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Auto Robbery Crime Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5355. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
Nighttime Home Security Tips
An armed home invasion is a terrifying event. While targeted attacks are difficult to prevent entirely, homeowners can take several steps to increase their nighttime security:
- Reinforce All Doors: Ensure every exterior door is equipped with a heavy-duty deadbolt and a reinforced strike plate to prevent the door from being easily kicked open.
- Use Window Security Film: Apply shatter-resistant security film to glass doors and ground-floor windows. This makes it significantly harder for an intruder to smash the glass and gain entry.
- Keep Your Keys Near Your Bed: Keep your car keys on your nightstand. If you hear someone breaking in, pressing the panic button on your key fob can startle the intruders and alert neighbors.
- Designate a Safe Room: Have a plan in place for your family to quickly move to an interior room with a solid-core door and a strong lock if you hear an intruder in the house. Always keep a charged cell phone in this room to call 911.
