Suspect Arrested After Woman Watches Break-In Live on Security Cameras
A quick-thinking Salmon Arm woman and her modern home security system proved to be the perfect combination for the RCMP, leading to the rapid arrest of a burglar.
Live-Streamed Burglary
The incident took place on the evening of March 21. According to the RCMP, they received an urgent call at approximately 8:00 p.m. from a resident living on 10th Avenue SW.
The woman reported to police that she was actively receiving alerts from her smart home security system and was watching a male intruder burglarize her house via a live video feed on her smartphone.
Because she was able to watch the break-and-enter in real-time, the homeowner was able to provide the police dispatcher with a highly detailed description of the suspect's clothing, exactly what items he had stolen from her home, and his exact direction of travel when he finally fled the property.
Swift Police Response and Arrest
"One Salmon Arm RCMP member was already nearby and located a man in matching clothing walking on 10th Avenue SW," explained RCMP Constable Andrew Hodges.
Upon stopping the suspect, the officer searched him and discovered an item in his possession that perfectly matched the description of the property the homeowner had literally just watched him steal.
The suspect, identified by police as 46-year-old Tyler Carr, was immediately taken into custody.
Carr is now facing multiple criminal charges, including break and enter with intent to commit theft, possession of property obtained by crime, and theft under $5,000. Following a bail hearing, a judge ordered Carr to be remanded into police custody while he awaits his upcoming trial.
The Value of Smart Home Security
This incident perfectly illustrates how modern security technology can be highly effective not just for deterrence, but for active police enforcement:
- Invest in Smart Cameras: Traditional alarms just make noise, but Wi-Fi connected smart cameras allow you to instantly verify if an alarm is a false positive or an actual crime in progress.
- Enable Instant Notifications: Ensure your security app is set to bypass your phone's "Do Not Disturb" settings for critical alerts, so you are notified immediately if a sensor is tripped.
- Never Intervene Personally: If you receive an alert that an intruder is in your home, never attempt to confront them, even if you are inside the house. Get to a safe room, lock the door, and call 911 immediately while relaying the camera information to the dispatcher.
