Teen Arrested, Four Suspects Flee Following Armed Home Invasion
An 18-year-old from Elmira, Ontario, is facing a slew of serious criminal charges, including armed robbery and assaulting police officers, following a brazen early morning home invasion in St. Catharines.
Apartment Targeted by Five Suspects
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, March 13. According to the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), officers were dispatched to an apartment complex located near the intersection of Lake Street and Welland Avenue at approximately 3:50 a.m.
Investigators determined that a group of five suspects was involved in the coordinated attack. While four individuals forced their way into the targeted apartment, the 18-year-old suspect remained outside, acting as the getaway driver.
Inside the apartment, the four intruders confronted the residents, forcibly confined them, and proceeded to steal various items of personal property.
Police Rammed During Getaway Attempt
NRPS officers arrived on the scene rapidly, intercepting the suspects just as the robbery was concluding. The four suspects who had entered the apartment immediately fled the area on foot, running westbound away from the complex.
However, police successfully cornered the suspected getaway driver, who was operating a white Acura TLX. Police later confirmed that the Acura had been reported stolen out of Mississauga.
In a desperate bid to escape, the 18-year-old suspect allegedly used the stolen vehicle to intentionally ram two marked police cruisers. Despite the violent evasion attempt, officers successfully apprehended the teen at the scene.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
The 18-year-old suspect is now facing a severe list of criminal charges stemming from the incident, which include:
- Armed robbery
- Forcible confinement
- Possession of a dangerous weapon
- Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
Meanwhile, the massive search for the four outstanding suspects continues. NRPS Constable Richard Hingley confirmed that the victims were unable to positively identify the four suspects who entered the home, as they were heavily masked.
NRPS detectives are urging anyone who lives or was travelling in the area of Lake Street and Welland Avenue around 3:50 a.m. on March 13 to review their home security, doorbell, or dashcam footage.
Anyone with footage or information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the four outstanding suspects is asked to contact NRPS detectives directly at 905-688-4111, option 2, ext. 1009222. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers of Niagara.
Securing Apartment Living
While apartment buildings offer a level of shared security, individual units can still be targeted. Protect your apartment with these essential security measures:
- Upgrade Your Hardware: Request that your landlord install a heavy-duty deadbolt on your front door, as standard knob locks are easily bypassed. Ensure the strike plate is secured with long screws that penetrate the structural framing.
- Use Your Peephole: Never buzz someone into the building or open your individual apartment door without verifying their identity first. If your door lacks a peephole, request one be installed immediately.
- Secure Sliding Doors: If your apartment is on the ground floor or has a balcony accessible from the ground, place a sturdy wooden dowel or metal bar in the track of sliding glass doors to physically prevent them from being forced open.
