Securing Valuables Against Targeted Attacks
This incident highlights the dangers of storing large amounts of cash and high-value items at home, making the property a target for organized criminals:
- Limit Cash on Hand: Avoid keeping "significant amounts of money" in your house. Utilize bank safety deposit boxes for large cash reserves and extremely valuable jewelry.
- Conceal Your Safe: If you must use a home safe, ensure it is heavily bolted to the floor or wall studs and hidden from plain sight. A visible safe is an immediate target for armed intruders.
- Use Decoy Safes: Some security experts recommend having a small, easily accessible "decoy" safe containing a small amount of cash to satisfy intruders quickly, while the actual valuables are hidden securely elsewhere.
- Maintain Discretion: Never boast about wealth, cash on hand, or expensive purchases on social media, as this information is frequently used by criminals to select their targets.
