Winnipeg Woman Apprehended After Impersonating Police Officer in Attempted Break-In

Winnipeg Police are urging residents to remain vigilant after an alarming incident in the River Park South neighbourhood where a suspect attempted to break into a home while posing as a law enforcement officer.

The Attempted Intrusion

While complete details of the incident are still under investigation, authorities confirmed that a female suspect targeted a home in River Park South. During the attempted break-in, the suspect audaciously claimed to be a police officer in an effort to convince the homeowners to unlock the door and allow her inside.

Fortunately, the residents grew suspicious of the woman's claims and refused to grant her entry. The suspect was unable to force her way into the home, resulting in a failed break-in attempt. Police were immediately notified of the terrifying encounter.

Impersonating a police officer is a serious criminal offense, and investigators are working diligently to piece together the events and ensure the individual responsible faces appropriate charges.

How to Verify a Police Officer's Identity

Criminals occasionally use the guise of authority to manipulate victims. If someone claiming to be a police officer arrives at your door, you have the right to verify their identity before allowing them inside:

  • Request Identification: Ask to see their official police badge and photo identification card. Genuine officers are required to carry and present this identification upon request.
  • Look for Uniform Details: While some officers work in plainclothes, uniformed officers should have clearly identifiable police insignia, name tags, and official equipment.
  • Call the Dispatcher: If you are still unsure or feel unsafe, do not open the door. Call the non-emergency police line or 911 to verify if officers have been dispatched to your address.
  • Communicate Through a Locked Door: You are not obligated to open your door immediately. Speak through the locked door or a secure window until you are completely satisfied with the officer's identity.
