Letterkenny: Arrest Made Following Spate of Business Burglaries
Local businesses in Letterkenny are being urged to review their security measures after a sudden spike in commercial burglaries over a 24-hour period. Swift action by local Gardaí has resulted in the arrest of a suspect, but authorities warn that opportunistic thieves remain a constant threat to both commercial and residential properties in the area.
Two Burglaries in 24 Hours
The crime spree began on Monday afternoon when Gardaí received a report of a break-in at a local business premises. Officers responded promptly, and a short time later, a man was apprehended in connection with the incident. He was subsequently charged and is due to appear in court.
However, the town experienced a second incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Burglars targeted the LK Ink Tattoo Studio, located on Oldtown Road. Following an investigation into this second break-in, Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s. He is currently being detained at Letterkenny Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Gardaí Issue Urgent Security Warning
In response to these incidents, Garda Grainne Doherty issued a public appeal, reminding everyone in the community that burglaries are not solely nighttime offenses. "Burglaries do not always happen under the cover of darkness, and everyone needs to be security aware at all times of the year," she cautioned, urging property owners not to make life easy for prowling thieves.
Protecting Your Property
To combat the threat of opportunistic crime, Gardaí strongly advise implementing the following preventative measures:
- Utilize Quality Locks: Ensure all external doors, windows, and garden sheds are fitted with robust, high-quality locks. Use heavy-duty chains for valuable equipment or tools stored inside.
- Activate Alarms and Lighting: Always use your property's alarm system when leaving, even for short periods. Leave a light on, particularly during the evening hours, to give the illusion that the premises is occupied.
- Secure Valuables: Store keys safely away from windows and letterboxes where they could be "fished" out. Do not keep large amounts of cash on the premises, and maintain a photographic record of all valuable items to assist in recovery if stolen.
