Mallow: Tens of Thousands in Damage After JCB Ramming at Supermarket

Attempted ATM Theft Causes Massive Structural Damage

Dedicated staff members at a local supermarket in Mallow, County Cork, received a devastating and distressing shock when they arrived for work early Tuesday morning to find the entire front entrance of their workplace completely destroyed. According to an active and ongoing investigation by local Gardaí, an organized criminal gang is currently strongly suspected of stealing a heavy-duty industrial JCB telehandler and purposefully using it as a blunt battering ram. The brazen and highly destructive incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. when the perpetrators violently repeatedly rammed the heavy machinery into the glass front of Dano’s SuperValu, which is located in the Ballydahin area of Mallow. The primary objective of the chaotic raid was apparently to gain rapid, unauthorized access to the supermarket's internal ATM. However, sources close to the investigation have confirmed that the targeted ATM was completely empty at the time of the attack, as smaller, independent supermarket cash machines are routinely emptied overnight by management, especially following a busy long bank holiday weekend.

Supermarket Faces Tens of Thousands in Urgent Repairs

The sheer, unbridled force of the stolen JCB ramming into the commercial building resulted in catastrophic damage to the physical storefront. Con O’Keeffe, a longtime checkout supervisor at Dano’s SuperValu, stated that the entire front glass facade of the shop is completely ruined and will unfortunately require a full, costly replacement. In addition to the main building itself, heavy metal protective bollards located outside the shop were also snapped and destroyed during the violent ramming incident. The total financial cost of the extensive structural damage is currently estimated to run well into the tens of thousands of euros, placing a significant and unexpected burden on the popular family-run business and severely disrupting their normal daily trading operations. Gardaí responded very quickly to the chaotic scene on Tuesday morning and are actively appealing to the local public for any assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the Mallow area around 1:30 a.m., or who has specific information regarding the movements of the stolen JCB, is urgently asked to contact the Mallow Garda Station or the national Garda Confidential Line.
