Aggravated Burglary on Hawthorn Avenue Leaves Victim Hospitalised with Suspected Broken Arm

CARRICKFERGUS, County Antrim — A police investigation is underway following a violent aggravated burglary in the Hawthorn Avenue area of Carrickfergus on the evening of Monday, December 9, 2024. The incident has left a male occupant injured and the local community shocked.

Violent Assault at the Doorway

According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the ordeal began at approximately 9:00 p.m. when two unidentified males approached the residence. Upon the victim opening the door, the suspects launched an immediate attack using a weapon. During the confrontation, one of the intruders shattered an adjacent window and continued to strike the victim through the broken glass.

The victim sustained significant injuries, including a suspected broken arm, and was treated for physical trauma and severe shock. Emergency services attended the scene, and police cordoned off the area to conduct forensic examinations.

Arrest and Charges Filed

Following swift enquiries, detectives arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with the attack. On December 12, 2024, the PSNI confirmed he had been officially charged with multiple offences, including aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, criminal damage, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He is scheduled to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court on January 9, 2025.
