Deadly Home Invasion in Richmond Leaves One Dead, One Injured

On the night of October 1, 2023, a man broke into a home in the 2600 block of Floyd Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. The intruder, later identified as 28-year-old James Smith, allegedly claimed that music urged him to commit the crime. Smith entered the residence through an unlocked back door and confronted the homeowner, 45-year-old John Doe, who was inside with his wife. A struggle ensued, during which Doe was fatally shot. Smith then fled the scene, taking a laptop and a small amount of cash, valued at approximately $500.

Smith was apprehended later that night after a police chase. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a minor injury sustained during the chase. The homeowner's wife, who was present during the incident, was not physically harmed but was taken to the hospital for shock.
