Deadly Shooting During Kansas City Home Invasion
On Sunday, January 7, 2024, a home invasion occurred at a residence in the 600 block of East 63rd Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The suspects, a male and a female, broke into the home and stole an undetermined amount of cash and jewelry valued at approximately $5,000. The female suspect was armed with a handgun.
During the burglary, a Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officer responded to the scene. The female suspect attempted to flee in a vehicle but was shot by the officer. The female suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The male suspect, identified as 28-year-old Darnell Smith, was apprehended and charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and burglary. He is currently being held on a $1 million cash-only bond. The officer involved in the shooting was not injured, and the investigation is ongoing. The police have appealed for any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward.
