Distraction burglar impersonates water utility worker to target Leamington homes

Police have issued an urgent warning to Leamington Spa residents after an individual gained entry to local households by impersonating an employee from a water company.

Deceptive Method of Entry

The distraction burglar targeted homes in early October 2024, claiming that there was an urgent issue with the water supply or a pipe leak nearby that required them to check the taps inside the property. Trusting the suspect's official-sounding explanation, residents allowed him inside, where he then searched for cash, jewelry, and other high-value items while the occupants were kept distracted.

Safety Advice Issued

Following the incidents, Warwickshire Police and local water utility providers have reminded the public to always demand identification before allowing any worker into their homes. Legitimate employees will always carry official photo ID and will be happy to wait outside while residents call the company directly to verify their identity and check if a visit was scheduled.

Suspect Description and Investigation

Officers are appealing for witnesses who may have noticed suspicious individuals door-knocking or walking around residential streets in Leamington Spa at the time. Anyone with doorbell cameras or home security footage is asked to check for suspicious activity and contact the police with any matching recordings.
