Motherwell Man Jailed After Robbing 13-Year-Old Boy of £20 on Footpath
A 32-year-old Motherwell man, Thomas McDougall, has pleaded guilty to a targeted and aggressive robbery of a 13-year-old boy on a public footpath. The incident, which occurred near Bellshill Road in June 2024, sparked local outrage and highlighted concerns over safety on pedestrian pathways in the area. McDougall was arrested shortly after the robbery occurred and appeared before Hamilton Sheriff Court.
Details of the Footpath Encounter
The court heard that on the evening of June 7, 2024, the 13-year-old victim was walking home with a 14-year-old friend at approximately 6:00 PM. McDougall approached the young boys in an aggressive manner, zeroing in on the victim. He demanded to know if the children had any money or mobile phones, while aggressively eyeing the boy's shoes. McDougall then issued a direct threat, warning that he would "crack" the boy if he did not comply. Out of fear for his safety, the young boy handed over a £20 note, after which McDougall fled the scene.
CCTV Evidence and Identification
Unbeknownst to the suspect, the entire encounter was captured on local CCTV cameras. Police Scotland officers review the footage and immediately identified McDougall, leading to his prompt arrest. During court proceedings, it was revealed that McDougall was already on three separate bail orders at the time of the footpath robbery. In addition to the robbery charge, McDougall also pleaded guilty to carrying a knife in Motherwell town centre on May 8, after CCTV operators spotted him behaving suspiciously with the weapon in public.
Sentencing and Community Impact
At Hamilton Sheriff Court, McDougall's actions were heavily condemned, with the prosecution emphasizing the vulnerability of the victim. The defense acknowledged that the crime was opportunistic and easily identified. The court scheduled sentencing pending background reports, with McDougall remaining in custody. Local residents have expressed relief at the conviction, urging for increased surveillance and police presence along Motherwell's footpaths to protect children and elderly citizens from similar street crimes.
