North Shields Robber Who Used Letterbox Flap as Weapon Targeted Helpful Shopkeeper

A shopkeeper in North Shields was subjected to a terrifying ordeal when a local man, whom the victim had previously helped, entered the shop armed with a metal letterbox flap and demanded cash.

The court heard that the defendant had fallen on hard times and had been given food and assistance by the community-minded shopkeeper in the past. However, on the day of the offence, the man entered the premises brandishing the heavy metal object, demanding money from the till and threatening the store owner.

The victim, left deeply shocked by the betrayal and the aggression, managed to raise the alarm. The perpetrator was subsequently arrested by Northumbria Police and has appeared in court, where he was described as targeting a vulnerable and charitable local figure.
