According to an article published on 22 January 2024 by Itv, a 37-year-old man from Harlow has been sentenced to 18 months in prison following a burglary at a private home. Darryl Smith gained entry to the property of an 86-year-old resident by falsely claiming he had been assaulted.
Itv reports that once inside, Smith stole the pensioner's wallet and bank cards. He subsequently used the cards to purchase approximately ยฃ120 worth of goods, including alcohol, cigarettes, and scratchcards. Police arrested Smith three days later, utilizing CCTV footage from local businesses and fingerprint evidence collected at the scene.
Smith pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, two counts of fraud, and possession of a Class B drug. Detective Inspector Karen Knibbs stated that the offender exploited the victim's kindness to gain access to the home. The investigation concluded with Smith's sentencing on 12 January.
