Skipton: Garden centre faces bill of thousands after break in

SKIPTON, North Yorkshire โ€” A well-known garden centre in Skipton is facing a repair and restocking bill running into thousands of pounds following a destructive overnight break-in.

Widespread Damage and Loss

The incident occurred overnight on Friday, 27 September 2024. Offenders forced entry through the main gates of the garden centre, causing significant structural damage. Once inside, they ransacked the retail shop, smashed display units, and targeted the point-of-sale systems. In addition to property damage, the thieves stole high-value garden machinery, power tools, and specialized outdoor equipment.

The owners of the garden centre expressed their devastation, noting that the cost of repairs, combined with the loss of specialized stock, represents a significant financial blow just as the season transitions.

Call for Local Vigilance

North Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident and have urged local residents and business owners to remain vigilant. Business owners are advised to review their security setups, ensure alarms and CCTV are fully operational, and secure high-value equipment in locked indoor facilities.

“This break-in has caused considerable distress and financial harm to a valued local business,” police said. “We are appealing to the community to help us find those responsible. If you noticed any suspicious vehicles parked near the garden centre or have seen high-end gardening machinery offered for sale locally, please contact us.”

How to Assist the Police

Anyone with information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting the reference number for the Skipton garden centre burglary. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers.
