'What Have You Done to Me': Redcar Café Owner Devastated After Business Ransacked Twice in 48 Hours
The owner of a popular Redcar High Street café has spoken of his utter devastation after his business was targeted, ransacked, and burgled by thieves twice in just two days, leaving the shop floor in ruins and raising questions over its future.
Mike, the owner of Mike's Cafe, shared a deeply emotional video on social media on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, showing the extensive damage done to the premises. The footage captured a scene of complete disarray: refrigerators left wide open with food spoiling, kitchen equipment tossed across the counters, and stock strewn all over the floor. In the video, Mike can be seen breaking down in tears, asking: "Just why, oh why? What have you done to me? Twice in two days, I can't believe it. I can't do it anymore."
The double break-in shattered the business owner, who admitted he felt completely defeated and had no plans to reopen the establishment. The toll of cleaning up the wreckage and facing the financial loss for a second consecutive morning appeared to be the final straw for the local independent business.
However, the heartbreaking video quickly went viral within the local community, sparking an immediate and overwhelming wave of solidarity. Shocked residents rallied to support the beloved business owner, launching a GoFundMe fundraising campaign. Within just a few days, the page raised thousands of pounds, far exceeding its initial target, as hundreds of people donated to help cover repair costs and replace stolen stock.
Deeply moved by the generosity, Mike released a follow-up video expressing his profound gratitude to the community. He credited the outpouring of love and financial support as the sole reason he found the strength to clean up the café, repair the security doors, and reopen the business. "I can't thank you all enough," he said. "Without the community behind me, I would have walked away for good. You've given me my business back."
Cleveland Police have confirmed they are investigating both burglaries and are reviewing security footage from nearby premises on Redcar High Street to identify those responsible for the targeted attacks.
