Workington Supermarket Cash Machines Targeted in Overnight Raid
An investigation is underway after thieves targeted cash machines at a supermarket in Workington during a late-night raid, causing significant damage to the premises.
The overnight incident occurred at a major retail supermarket in the Workington area on August 12, 2024. Police reports indicate that the perpetrators attempted to compromise the store's external automated teller machines (ATMs) in an effort to extract cash. Although it has not been confirmed if any currency was successfully stolen, the physical impact of the attempt left the machines heavily damaged and unusable for customers.
Officers cordoned off the affected area of the supermarket facade the following morning as forensic specialists conducted an intensive examination of the crime scene. Detectives are currently gathering CCTV footage from the supermarket and surrounding commercial establishments to trace the route taken by the suspects and identify any getaway vehicles used in the operation.
Residents who may have heard unusual noises or observed suspicious vehicles near the supermarket during the early hours of the morning are strongly encouraged to contact Cumbria Constabulary. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crimestoppers, as police continue to seek witnesses to help crack down on commercial cash-in-transit and ATM attacks in the region.
