Father-of-Five Sentenced to Prison for Wicklow Burglary
A father-of-five with a record of 104 previous convictions has been jailed following a conviction for a burglary committed in Wicklow. The sentencing took place during a recent court session, highlighting the impact of repeat offenses on the community.
The court heard details of the break-in, which occurred at a property in Wicklow. Gardaí apprehended the defendant shortly after the incident. In mitigation, the defense attorney highlighted the defendant's family responsibilities as a father of five, urging the court to consider a non-custodial sentence or community service options.
However, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the break-in and noted that the defendant's extensive criminal record, which includes over one hundred prior convictions, demonstrated a persistent disregard for the law and the rights of property owners. The court ruled that a custodial sentence was necessary to serve as both a punishment and a deterrent.
The defendant was sentenced to a term of imprisonment, with a portion of the sentence suspended on the condition of good behavior post-release and engagement with probation services. He was remanded in custody to begin serving his sentence immediately.
