Hastings Shoplifter Attacks Bystander After Being Caught in the Act

An attempted shop theft in Hastings, East Sussex, turned violent after a shoplifter assaulted an individual who confronted him. The suspect was spotted trying to steal items from the shelves of a local business and was intercepted before he could exit the building.

Upon being caught, the Hastings man reacted aggressively, physically attacking the person who intervened to stop the theft. Witnesses described a brief struggle before police officers, who were in the vicinity, arrived on the scene and detained the attacker. The victim of the assault sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Sussex Police confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and charged with both attempted theft and assault. A police spokesperson emphasized the risks involved in directly confronting shoplifters, advising business owners and the public to contact emergency services immediately when thefts occur.
