Italy has experienced a sustained, four-year increase in officially recorded residential burglaries. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of reported incidents rose from 109,503 to 155,590. This trajectory represents a cumulative increase of 42.1% over the four-year period, marking the highest volume of recorded cases on record for this timeframe.

The rise in residential burglaries has been consistent and consecutive since 2020. In the first year of this period, 2020, authorities recorded 109,503 cases. By 2021, the figure climbed to 124,715. The upward momentum continued into 2022, with 133,802 recorded incidents. In 2023, the total reached 147,660, and by the conclusion of 2024, the annual count reached 155,590.

When normalized against the national population of 58,971,230, the 2024 data reveals a national residential burglary rate of 263.84 per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure provides a standardized measure of the prevalence of the offence across the country's total population.
Where it hits hardest
Regional data for 2024 highlights significant variance in the concentration of residential burglaries across Italy's 241 areas. In terms of absolute volume, the ITC region recorded 48,610 cases, followed by ITD with 40,575 cases, and ITE with 37,438 cases. Other notable areas by volume include ITC4 with 34,333 cases and ITF with 21,792 cases.
When analyzing the intensity of the offence through population-adjusted rates, the data identifies specific areas of high impact. The area with the highest recorded rate is ITE17, which stands at 544.2 per 100,000 inhabitants.
